8 Ways to Save on Electricity

1. Switch appliances off at the wall

Turn off your electric appliances at the powerpoint before going to bed. This is quick, easy and immediately starts saving you money. Many appliances still use what’s called standby power even when not in use. An empty beer fridge in the garage is costing you all the time it’s on.

2. Save with your dishwasher and washing machine

How many times do we flick past the ‘quick washes’ and select ‘Intensive’ or the cottons 1hr.30min wash? Use the quick wash option on your washing machine and dryer where you can. It’ll save you time and money!

Also wait until your washing machine and dishwasher are full before running the cycle.

And use a cold wash!

3. Install Energy Efficient Lighting

Light bulbs can contribute a surprising amount to your power bill, especially if you have old incandescent or halogen light bulbs. Consider installing energy efficient light globes. Not only do they use less electricity, but they last longer, too. For example, if you change 20 halogen downlights to LED downlights, you can save up to $210 a year on energy costs.

4. Replace your old shower head

Replacing your old shower head with a more efficient one. Reduce your water usage by changing your shower head to a water-efficient 4-star version. This will reduce your water bill and your hot water electricity costs at the same time. By doing this can save you around $160 each year on energy and water bills.

5. Turn down your heater

Keeping the house at 20 degrees uses less energy than keeping it at 22 degrees in winter. Wear a jumper and rug up indoors.

6. Close doors and curtains

You can increase your heating and cooling efficiencies by closing the doors and shutting blinds of rooms that are not in use.

7. Upgrade your power board

Working from home means more devices being used more often. If you’re using a regular power board to connect all of your devices, then it’s most likely wasting energy. Consider replacing your old power boards with new smart docking stations, as they help to reduce wasted energy while your devices are on standby.

7. Shutdown your computers at night

Desktop computers in sleep mode are using energy, shut down your computer at the end of the day.

8. Make the most of off-peak

If you are on an electricity plan with an off-peak rate, there are a few simple ways you can make the most of it. Check your bill for the exact times when your off-peak rates and times apply to run your energy guzzling appliances. Use timers on your washing machine, dishwasher or dryer to run these appliances when you are about to go to bed.

There are so many places in the home where electricity can be saved, it’s just a matter of switching up your appliance usage habits. I’d love for you to give some of these a go and let us know if you see the savings in 3 months time.
